Top ten finish for Alvaro Bautista in Austrian GP

 In MotoGP, News

The Austrian Grand Prix belongs to Ducati for another season at least, after victory for Jorge Lorenzo today backed up prior wins here for Andrea Iannone in 2016 and Andrea Dovizioso in 2017. Lorenzo’s third win of the season lifts him to third in the championship, ahead of Dovizioso, after last lap battle for the win with Marc Márquez that delighted the 93,000 fans in attendance.

Just 0.130 seconds separated the pair at the line, although second place for Márquez was enough to increase his championship lead over Valentino Rossi by ten points. Dovizioso completed the podium in third place after losing touch with the front two in the closing stages.

The Ángel Nieto Team and Álvaro Bautista enjoyed another MotoGP top ten finish, their sixth in a row, after another strong fightback from the Spaniard. Bautista started from twelfth on the grid but got caught up in a chaotic turn three, dropping back to sixteenth. From that point he made a number of overtakes and took advantage of mistakes from his rivals to move up to tenth place at the finish.

10th Álvaro Bautista:
“Top ten finishes are always important but I was hoping for more from this race because of the feeling I had with the bike in practice. I made a good start and moved up a couple of positions but a few riders ran wide into turn three and one of them ran into me. Luckily, I didn’t crash but I did lose several positions. I had to spend the rest of the race recovering ground and the feeling wasn’t the same as in practice. I was struggling to get the bike stopped but I could see that I had the pace to catch the guys in front of me. I was able to catch Zarco and Rabat and even moved up to ninth in the final corner but Zarco came in a little aggressive and passed us both. It is a good result but I think it could have been better without the incident on the first lap – maybe the top six or seven, which was our true potential today. Hopefully we can keep this up in England.”
