Sensational Pole Position for Xavi Vierge in Argentina

With an incredible final lap in the wet qualifying session of the Termas de Rio Hondo, Xavi Vierge secured the Pole Position for the Argentina Grand Prix 2018! Dynavolt Intact GP’s Marcel Schrötter was less fortunate in these treacherous conditions.

Cooler temperatures and a damp track challenged Xavi Vierge and Marcel Schrötter on the second day at the Termas de Rio Hondo. Both Dynavolt Intact GP riders struggled to adjust to the conditions in the last free practice on Saturday morning, which took place in a light drizzle. After places 25 and 26, the tension rose shortly before the qualifying.

Xavi Vierge proved nerves and a big fighter heart, as he didn’t set for a rear position in the rainy qualifying. At first, he steadily increased in his last exit and jumped from 18th to ninth, which looked promising. But then the 20-year-old put everything into his last round and burned one fastest sector after another in the Argentinian asphalt. With 0.271 seconds ahead, he catapulted himself to the front of the field and was rewarded with the first pole position of his World Championship career.

Xavi Vierge:

“This Qualifying was very difficult in the beginning. I went out first on the slick tyre as half the track was dry but some sectors of the track were very wet. When I saw I wasn’t fast enough, I came in to change to rain tyre but I only had a little time to prepare the rain-set-up. When I went out again the rain continued and the tarmac was completely wet by then. I didn’t think pole position was possible but with every lap I improved and I felt better on the bike. My lap time was more competitive and with five minutes to go I pushed even more. I almost crashed but luckily I saved it and in the last lap I tried it all and we finally got my first pole position in Moto2. This is incredible and I am so happy. Tomorrow we will have to wait and see what the weather brings. This track is pretty difficult to ride in the wet. It will be hard to make a decision when it’s not all wet. But it’s the same situation for all the riders. The pace is really good under dry condition. I have a good rhythm and that’s what we worked towards for the race.”
