Espargaro again fastest on first day at Mugello

First and fourth positions were registered by the Tuenti Racing Derbi riders in the first day of action at the Gran Premio d‘Italia, occurring at habitual venue of Mugello. Pol Espargaró set the fastest time and continues to show he is in fine form, while Efrén Vázquez sealed fourth spot. ‘Polyccio’ was regularly setting laps within the 1.59 bracket –after only seven laps into the session– and only Nico Terol was able to dip under the two minute mark. ‘Efrentxu’ kept on improving throughout the afternoon and at the end of the qualifying period found the best setting to circulate with the same speed as the pace-setters.

1. POL ESPARGARÓ, 1.59.373
“We started on the right foot, and this is important to take some confidence and keep relaxed working towards the race. I felt good on the bike from the first moment and the times came relatively easy to me even though there was not much grip on the track; there should be more after the Moto2 and MotoGP guys have been out. Tomorrow we will try to continue in this way and take our first pole position of the season, even though the most important thing will be to prepare for the race and for this reason I didn’t stop in the pits to try a softer tyre for qualifying.”

4. EFRÉN VÁZQUEZ, 2.00.218
“We had a small problem in the opening phases of the session, trying to evolve the set-up we have in Le Mans, and until the final minutes we could not get quick enough to be among the fastest. I think we are working on a decent level and it is good to have a reference from Pol to see the possibilities we can reach with this motorcycle. At the end of the qualifying we went for it, and provisionally we are both on the front row which leaves us confident so far for the race.”
