Further podium and championship lead for Pol
Pol Espargaró captured his fourth podium from five races at the British Grand Prix and now leads the MotoGP/125cc World Championship by one point from Nico Terol. The Tuenti Racing Derbi rider finished second after an intense duel with Marc Márquez was decided inside the final two laps and almost ended in disaster. ‘Polyccio’ rode almost a second faster than he had managed in qualification, setting the new circuit record at 2.13.781. Also fighting for the top three was Efrén Vázquez, with Bradley Smith and Terol for close company. Just before the finish, when he was third, Nico touched his rear wheel and sent him flying. Luckily he was unharmed and could cross the line in eleventh. The next race will take place in six days at Assen (Holland).
2nd POL ESPARGARÓ
“I couldn’t win the race but I could easily have hit the floor and I didn’t. Instead I leave Silverstone with 20 points and as leader of the world championship. It was a very hard race that we made at a brutal speed – in my case a second faster than I managed in the previous days – and until the end I was fighting for the victory. It wasn’t to be today but it was important to get those points for what will be a long and competitive chase for the title in which any mistake will be costly. On the last lap Márquez and I touched three times and it was a miracle I saved a crash by lifting the bike with my elbow and knee. We are doing well and we are in good form; we have to keep believing in ourselves and riding with our head.”
11th EFRÉN VÁZQUEZ
“I had a great race and I couldn’t take the podium that I fought for so desperately. I started really well and in one lap gained four positions. I tried to go with Pol but it wasn’t possible so then I was tussling in a group with Terol and Smith. On the last lap I was just ahead when Nico touched my rear wheel and sent me flying, although luckily I was not hurt and could even make the finish for a few points. I hope to have more luck in the future and return to the podium, where I hope I can join in the celebrations with Pol.”
