Good race for Simon at Dutch TT

The heat is rising in the MotoGP World Championship, and there were high temperatures in Holland on Saturday for the Moto2 Dutch TT at the historic Assen circuit. In keeping with the topography of the host country, the race was perhaps a little flat, although there were plenty of points of interest for the spectator. Andrea Iannone put on a dominant display to win by a comfortable margin from pole, breaking away as if he was competing in 125cc. Toni Elías and Thomas Luthi took the remaining podium spots.

Mapfre Aspar’s riders had a decent race in the Moto2 class, riding for a long time alongside one another. Julián Simón and Mike Di Meglio finished sixth and eight, respectively, in Assen with the former starting from the same position on the grid. Simón had a tough start and wasn’t able to put himself amongst the frontrunners on lap one, but was able to make up the three places lost and finish high up the field.

6th Julián Simón: “Sixth place isn’t bad, because we picked up further points, but obviously I would have preferred a podium. If I were to have got a better start and put myself into the mix on the opening lap, then perhaps I would have been in with a chance of the rostrum, which is a pity. After that, I was at the limit trying to keep in the 1’39’s, but that was tough. Iannone was very fast. Elías y Wilairot weren’t as quick, but took off much better. We worked well all weekend, even making a few changes in the warmup, but I think that in the end we had too soft a suspension on the rear and difficulties opening the throttle to the full. We also had a soft rear tyre, so when that wore down we didn’t have the grip to push harder on the final laps. It was a hard-fought sixth place, but apart from last year it has always been a difficult track. I hope that next weekend we can be back on the podium in Montmeló.”
