Jorge Lorenzo continues remarkable season

 In MotoGP

Jorge Lorenzo extended his lead at the top of the championship table with his first ever race victory at the Laguna Seca circuit. This victory continued his season of setting new records and passing new milestones:

  • The win at Laguna Seca was Lorenzo’s eleventh victory in the MotoGP class; one more than his great rival Dani Pedrosa. Alex Criville, with 15 victories, is the only Spanish rider to have more wins than Lorenzo in the premier-class.
  • Lorenzo has a 72-point lead in the championship standings. This is the largest advantage a rider has had in the MotoGP class after 9 rounds since Valentino Rossi had a 104-point lead at the same stage of the championship in 2005.
  • Jorge Lorenzo is the first Yamaha rider to start on pole at five successive Grand Prix races since Max Biaggi in 2001 on the 500cc two-stroke YZR500.
  • He is the first rider since Valentino Rossi in 2002, to finish either first or second at the opening nine MotoGP races of the year.
  • Jorge Lorenzo has finished on the podium at each of the first nine races of the year, joining an elite group of riders who have achieved this previously in the premier-class: Giacomo Agostini, Wayne Rainey, Mick Doohan, Kevin Schwantz and Valentino Rossi.

There are number of milestones that Lorenzo could attain at the Czech Grand Prix, including:

  • He could become the first Yamaha rider ever to start from pole in the premier-class at six successive races.
  • If he finishes either first or second at the Czech GP he will become only the third rider in the 62-year history of Grand Prix racing to finish in the top two at the opening ten races of the year in the premier-class. The only two other riders to have achieved this are Giacomo Agostini and Mick Doohan.
