Difficult qualifying for Simon at Brno

 In Moto2, News

The Moto2 class were set back by half an hour this morning as fog cleared from the Brno circuit but the sunshine emerged for the afternoon and the session was able to take place on time. Qualifying was a typically close affair across the top ten positions although a dominant Shoya Tomizawa was able to stay on top throughout the majority of the session to seal pole position.

The two Mapfre Aspar riders on track were able to make notable improvements on their pace from the first day but it wasn’t enough to challenge at the top of the time sheets. Julián Simón gained a second and a half whilst his team-mate Mike Di Meglio improved by a second – both gaining confidence with a positive morning session before struggling in the afternoon. Julián has good corner speed but is struggling to find the right gear ratio whilst Mike is still lacking rear grip.

9th Julián Simón 2.04.519 (16 laps): “Qualifying wasn’t great for us and I was hoping for a better grid position. It was a tight session as usual and to be honest I didn’t get into my rhythm or manage to get a tow that allowed me to challenge for the front row. Anyway, we improved a lot on yesterday and that is positive. The bike feels stable and I’m comfortable on it but we need to work on the gear ratios and try to gain a little drive in certain areas. Tomizawa has a second on us at the moment and he’s riding the same bike so we have work to do. Suter have delivered some aerodynamic updates for this race and they have helped because the bike is more consistent at full speed.”
