Salom 11th fastest despite being first crasher in delayed wet practice
With a temperature of over 35 degrees in Malaysia, one week later the opposite weather present during the Iveco Australian Grand Prix. Barely 10 degrees, heavy rain and wind made the Race Directors decide to start the first free paractice two hours later. Randy Krummenacher finished the first day in ninth and teammate Luis Salom ended in eleventh place.
Initially, the 125cc first free practice should start at 12.40 hours local time, 04.40 hours European time. Because of a small storm raged over the Australian Phillip Island circuit and the last corner was completely flooded with water mixed and mud, the Race Directors decided to delay the free practice with two hours.
Eventually the 125cc riders went on the track and experienced the tricky track conditions. Because of all the water on the track, the first half of the session a lot of riders crashed. Also Luis Salom also crashed at a very low speed and could continue the session without a visit to the garage. The Spaniard took no further risks, but was still was good for an eleventh time.
Luis Salom (11th, 1:57.841):
“It’s too cold for me here! I really hate cold weather and wish to return back to the nice and hot weather in Malaysia. It also seems unlikely that the weather will become better this weekend. Despite the rain and the cold, it went okay today. An eleventh place is not my goal but the weekend is still long. Today we could get used to the wet and tricky track conditions and I expect I will be faster tomorrow. A top 10 qualifying shouldn’t be a problem. “
