Vazquez finishes fourth after tough battle for podium

 In News

Finnish team Ajo Motorsport lead by Aki Ajo had a great start in Qatar for their battle to defend the 125cc world championship this season. Avant-AirAsia-Ajo Derbi rider Efren Vazquez was fourth at the Losail circuit, Frenchman Johann Zarco finished sixth and Malaysian Zulfahmi Khairuddin was 19th.

Vazquez had a clear second position for a long until he took the penultimate curve a bit too wide with his Derbi-bike. Sergio Gadea who races at the SuperMartxé VIP Paris Hilton team punished immediately Vazquez for his mistake and removed his fellow-countryman away from the podium with a 0,367 second difference.

Spanish Nicolas Terol who started from the pole position was unbeatable; he took a clear lead immediately during the first few laps. German rider Sandro Cortese was second and Gadea third. Vazquez was 9,514 seconds behind the winner.

The next grand prix will be held after two weeks in Spain at the circuit of Jerez, which is more familiar for the riders.

Aki Ajo: Of course we always aim to win, but all in all this was a pretty good start for the season. The riders have potential for tough performances. At this stage I think that the most important is that everything worked extremely well here. One should remember that we have expanded our operation considerably. Testing during the winter wasn’ outstanding, but here Vazquez showed again his real talents. I would be amazed if we won’t see him on the podium during the next races. But we still have work to do with Vazquez’ bike. Efren has a special riding style since he is quite short (160 cm) and he has short arms.”

Efren Vazquez: “It´s a shame but this race showed already that I could ride and fight for the top positions also in this season. We worked well and hard here in Qatar. It gives me even more faith for the future.”
