Strong qualifying for Salom after difficult start to the weekend
After a difficult start to the weekend’s Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya it went much better today during the qualification session. The Spaniard Luis Salom qualified for his second home Grand Prix of the season on eighth starting position.
In the third free practice session it didn’t went very well for Luis Salom. This session started on a wet track and halfway through the session the riders could switch to slick tires. The Spaniard was faster than the Friday sessions but couldn’t be satisfied with a twelfth position.
In the qualifying session, dark clouds drifted over the Catalan circuit but the rain kept off. Salom did not perform well during this qualification and stayed around the sixteenth position. In the last ten minutes the Spaniard gave everything and moved up to an eleventh spot. In an ultimate final lap Salom manage to ride 0.7 seconds faster than the his fastest lap so far and scored a very good eight position. In his second home Grand Prix Sunday, the young Spaniard will start from the third row.
Luis Salom (13th, 1:52,629):
“Phew …. I’m glad I manage to ride a very fast lap in the last minute of this session. The weekend didn’t went well so far and I had trouble getting a fast lap. Yesterday morning it went better than yesterday but still not good enough. Also in qualifying it didn’t went well but in the final minutes of the session I went vack on track and was riding with the thought, all or nothing! This worked out good and gave me the eighth position. The bike is very fast! With a distance, we had today the highest top speed of 238 km/h. You don’t win races with only a high top speed but I know that the bike is good enough to score top results. Tomorrow I’m sure we will have a great race and we’ll see which position this will bring to us.”
