Salom overjoyed with first ever front row start
Luis Salom will start the 125cc race of the Italian Grand Prix Sunday from the front row. The 2.00.620 he set in his sixth lap was more than enough to start second. The fact that Johann Zarco was 1.6 seconds faster to get to pole position didn’t bother Salom at all. “That is not important”, he said calm and poised, while the rest of the team RW Racing GP around him had a small celebration.
Salom is obviously making headway and again the rain worked out favourably for the Spaniard. After a strong race in the rain at Silverstone (fourth) and a tactically smart one at Assen (second) it seems such difficult and changing conditions are just up his alley.
“Take care, watch closely and choose the exact right moment for action: that’s what it’s all about”, according to Salom.
“Right from the beginning of the qualifying session I had set the fastest time. Zarco was riding close behind me and ducked under my time. I had seen it began to drizzle lightly and understood I had to set a time before the rain became heavier. I let Zarco and Maverick Vinales pass me and took their slipstream. That gave me a front row start.’”
Thanks to his excellent results in Great Britain and Holland and with the quite reasonable laps he did in second and third free practice, Salom is in full confidence for the race that starts sunday at 11.00 (local time). Just like in Assen Salom will ride in the green and white of sponsor TVM, that decided to continue sponsoring for at least a few more rounds.
