Salom overjoyed to secure fifth place after great battle
With the knife between his teeth Luis Salom became fifth in the Grand Prix of Aragon. The final lap of the 125cc race was one to be framed.
Salom was part of a group of five (with Kent, Cortese, Vazquez and Moncajo) that sat together since the third lap and fought for fifth place. Because Hector Faubel crashed in the last corner, fourth was for taking. And thus did Salom. The Spanish rider of RW Racing GP started the last lap as fourth in his group of five, but he knew exactly what had to be done to finish as first of the group. After a series of clever passes he stormed towards the finish line next to Vazquez, who was his last victim. A photo finish was needed to determine the difference: 0.003 seconds.
Because of the crash of Faubel there was a yellow flag situation in the last corner. Salom was therefore relegated to fifth after the finish, but he was still overjoyed with it.
Luis Salom: “Everything went perfectly. The bike was fantastic, the race was great and the result is of course superb. I started from sixth place and was previously a bit worried that my hand would bother me again. But I have had no problems from it at all. Once you’re engaged in a battle like this, the adrenalin is the best possible pain killer. Nothing bothers you anymore then. It feels so good to be back in the top.”
