Espargaró takes three points from difficult race weekend
Expectations were high for the riders of the HP Pons 40 Moto2 team before the Grand Prix of Australia, but a bad qualifying session on Saturday which Aleix Espargaró only finished in 24th and teammate Axel Pons one place behind him, greatly complicated their chances to get a good result. Despite this Espargaró was able to finish 13th and take home some points from a close race in which he didn’t find a good feeling with the bike at any moment to go fast enough.
Meanwhile Axel Pons was held up by the slower pace of the riders who were ahead of him on the grid, leaving him stuck in 19th place and unable to aspire to get into the points.
The Moto2 championship does not rest and next weekend will be travelling to Malaysia for the penultimate round of the 2011 calendar.
#40. Aleix Espargaró: 13º
“The race didn’t go well. Already in the warmup I had no feeling for the tyres, I didn’t feel that they had grip, although obviously I didn’t go quick throughout the weekend. I don’t know, in Japan I could say it was the circuit which I don’t like a lot, but here I don’t have many reasons. It was another terrible weekend and I don’t understand why I’m having so much to trouble to go fast. I hope to do better in Malaysia.”
#80. Axel Pons: 19º
“Yesterday we had a disaster of a qualifying and this caused us to start from far back. Added to this I did a bad start and then was even further behind. I have made up all the positions that I could until there was a moment where the gap between my position and the one in front was too big. I pushed with everything I had to get away from the riders behind me, but I could not catch up with the ones ahead. Also, starting so far behind I’ve ran into slower riders, which made it difficult to move forward and caused the gap to the guys in front to increase more and then I couldn’t catch them.”
