Yamaha Factory Racing riders Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies could not ride in today’s Grand Prix of Australia following separate on track incidents by both.

World Champion Lorenzo was declared unfit to race after sustaining an injury to the fourth finger of the left hand during this morning’s warm up. He travelled to Melbourne to undergo plastic surgery to repair the damage. Trackside photos showed a gruesome outcome of the relatively harmless looking crash, the top segment of Lorenzo’s ring finger having been ripped off and part of the bone sticking out.

Jorge Lorenzo is currently undergoing surgery in Melbourne, the team will issue a full update of his condition and the expected recovery time will be released as soon as surgery is completed.

The injury meant that Lorenzo missed out on the race in Australia and his last chance to stop Casey Stoner from taking the MotoGP title. In Lorenzo’s absence Stoner to an expectedly dominant win, securing his second MotoGP championship after his title in 2007 with Ducati.
