His second consecutive podium was the reward for a hard-fought race by Luis Salom. In the final lap of the Portugese GP Salom put so much pressure on Zulfahmi Khairuddin he forced the Malaysian to make a mistake, handing over third place to Salom.

Salom delivered some breathtaking battles all over the race. At first with Sandro Cortese and Maverick Viñales for the lead. In lap 11 Khairuddin joined the leading group. Cortese and Viñales managed to break away from Salom and Khairuddin and had another exciting duel for victory. The gap between the two frontrunners and the battle for third grew to eleven seconds, leaving Salom with third as his best option.

The Spanish rider of RW Racing GP rode a strategic race following Khairuddin without leaving him much space. In the penultimate lap he raised the pressure on the Malaysian who ran wide in the end, leaving Salom the gap to pass.

Luis Salom (3rd): “It was a tough last lap, with Khairuddin and me touching each other several times. His bike seemed a little bit faster than my Kalex-KTM and I had to fight really hard for this third place. It was another exciting race with a great result. It’s a perfect start of the season, with two podium finishes in three races. We are expecting some new parts from Kalex, so it can only get better.”

Team manager Johan Stigefelt: “Both Luis and Brad did a great job. As did the team and our partners to give them a good bike. We have to keep on working, but for now we just take it in and enjoy this success.”
