Salom secures Moto3 runner-up spot with calculated race in tricky conditions
Salom was avoiding any risk and settled for tenth on the wet and slippery Valencia track. Salom was leading for a few laps until he saw the rest of the pack closing in. Dueling in the wet was too much of a risk, Salom decided. If securing his second place in the championship cost him a good result that would be worth it. Salom therefore decided to stay close to his main rival Maverick Viñales.
Luis Salom (10th): “My goal was to secure second place in the championship. Whatever happened I did not want to crash. So I decided not to take any risk. I waited for Viñales to be sure I had him in sight. I am so proud with this result. Second in the championship, it is a dream come true. It feels strange to leave this team. They have been like family to me. They kept on believing in it and working for it. We’ve done this together.”
Team manager Johan Stigefelt: “Luis’ achievement was great. I’m so proud on how he decided to back off and secure second in the championship. It is a great day for our team. It’s an honour to be a part of this. I’d like to thank everybody: Kalex and KTM and all our other partners and suppliers. It is a pity to see our riders leave but we keep in touch and we wish them all the best in the rest of their carreers. And we welcome our new riders Jasper Iwema and Jakub Kornfeil. But first we celebrate.”
