Oliveira optimistic for Jerez qualifying after struggling with engine issue during practice

Oliveira, Moto3, Moto2, Spanish MotoGP 2013 Amidst an early morning light rain and a power failure at the Jerez Circuit during the afternoon, the start of the MotoGP World Championship’s third round, the first in this season being held in Europe, wasn’t a perfect one for Miguel Oliveira who ended the day in 15th on the combined timesheets.

After registering the 10th fastest lap in the morning, the Mahindra Racing rider went to the second free practice aiming to improve his performance which he did by shaving one tenth of a second from his previous best lap and even managing to occupy the top spot of the time sheets. However, a power delivery problem prevented the Almada youngster from matching his rivals’ rhythm. Nevertheless, the problem is solved and the MGP3O rider is expected to present a stronger challenge tomorrow, during the last FP and the Qualifying.

Miguel Oliveira: “We were just warming-up during the morning practice after the break we had since Austin. In the second practice we intended to improve our time, which we did, but not by much; it was due to a problem with the engine, which is now solved. We were losing a lot of power during the practice, but the front riders are lapping with the same times we managed here during the pre-season tests, which is a good sign.

We can keep on improving some aspects of the bike; we managed to improve the tyre wear a lot, and that was something we were not achieving during practice. It looks like we found the way. Tomorrow will be crucial to present a good performance on the free practice so as to prepare the qualifying. The track temperatures will make it hard for the front tyre. But we are optimistic for Saturday and will pick up where we left today.”
