Today Assen lived up to its nickname and provided miracles at the ‘Cathedral’. At 3pm, the premier class began one of its best contests of the season so far. Valentino Rossi returned to winning ways, 2 years and 8 months after his last victory. Marc Márquez took second after a great battle with Cal Crutchlow, and Jorge Lorenzo placed fifth following a collarbone operation just 40 hours beforehand.

Aleix Espargaró joined the list of geniuses that made the race in Assen such a fantastic story. The POWER ELECTRONICS Aspar rider put the finishing touches to a stellar weekend, which yesterday saw him put a CRT bike onto a best-ever seventh place on the grid. Today he finished eighth for the third consecutive race. The result was even more impressive than previous successes at Montmeló and Mugello, due to the high amount of finishers in the Dutch TT.

Espargaró crossed the finish line just 32 seconds behind the best official prototype bike, after battling with several of them during the race.

8th Aleix Espargaró:
“Today I feel really happy. I had a very nice race -probably my best in MotoGP and certainly the best as a POWER ELECTRONICS Aspar Team rider. From Thursday I knew that this circuit was favourable to my bike, so I focused on trying to find the fastest pace possible. At the start I stuck with the frontrunners for a few laps, which was an extraordinary feeling. After Bradl moved three seconds ahead, I managed to keep him from increasing the difference and I have battled with Bautista. This eighth place, finishing ahead of the Ducati riders and Smith, is fabulous. We are doing a great job and every Grand Prix brings with it a new achievement. I want to thank the team for making this dream possible.”
