Dunlop Moto2 & Moto3 Indianapolis Preview

The final run to the end of the season kicks off in the USA this weekend and will be a much welcome return for the riders who should be feeling refreshed after a month-long break.

Only nine events remain and Dunlop moves into the busiest period of the Moto race season. In August Dunlop will have around 11,200 tyres in transit either at or on their way to destinations around the world.

Indianapolis is the first of three back-to-back events, and the Dunlop service resource is programmed with military precision. While part of the service team is flying back from the USA, another part will be driving the service vehicles from France and the UK to Brno in the Czech Republic. Then while at Brno the service vehicles for Silverstone will be prepared due to the time constraints of travel between the circuits given only one week between races and the 1000 miles/ 1600km distance between the two.

If that wasn’t enough the preparation for the three world events in October, Sepang, Phillip Island and Motegi is also carried out during August. The equipment and tyres for those races will be sea freighted for arrival in time for the overseas’ Grand Prix.

“We start the second part of the season at what is known as ‘the brickyard’. While the circuit is mostly recognised for its Indy 500 race with high banked corners, the GP circuit includes only a fraction of it, mainly on the start finish straight going into turn one. The rest of the circuit lies within the infield area. The infield surface has very low grip but needs compounds capable of defending against the very high wear and abrasion levels it causes to tyres.
“Last year’s race provided us with a good insight of what would be needed for future events here, so this year the Moto2 tyre allocation will incorporate three of the 3001 rear compound as well as the six of the 3838. The 3001 compound is the stronger of the two and was last raced in Austin. The 302 and 345 front compounds will be available with an even allocation of four tyres each.
“For the Moto3 tyre allocation, the new ‘H’ compound rear will be the only change to last year’s allocation with the other tyres available being the ‘H’ compound front as well as ‘M’ compound front and rear.”
