Maverick Viñales destroys Silverstone record

The first day of free practice sessions at the British GP could not have gone better for Team Calvo. Maverick Viñales finished first with a fantastic time, almost 1.5 seconds quicker than his pole position from last year.

The rider from Roses feels very good on the English track, but even though things started very well today, he wants to step up another gear before his rivals have chance to react. The leading 3 riders are very close together and no one can relax even in the slightest.

Also for Ana Carrasco it has been a great day as she finished 21st and headed the second timing screen. The young Team Calvo rider had asked her companion to not go as fast for a bit so she could follow his line and learn the track and its brake markers better to secure herself a better position on the starting grid.

The truth is that this is a circuit that I like a lot and we started the weekend very well. But in Brno we also started well and in the end we were lacking a little something. So we have to work, work, work to find that little bit more than our rivals. We always seem to start Fridays well and then drop off a little, we have to continue to stay on top. There is room for improvement, I believe we can step things up another gear. We already have a good setting, but we have to keep working to have it perfect on Sunday.

We started well, but we can’t sit back and relax because it’s only Friday and there’s still a lot of work to do on the bike because there are still some things with which I don’t feel comfortable. But this afternoon we could improve a lot compared to this morning and that’s very good. The only bad thing is that the new circuit record is 1.5 seconds quicker than the old one, with my time we would have been in the top ten last year. I’m still very happy, but I have to tell Maverick to not go quite as fast.

We have to be happy with the first day because Maverick has done a great job. Silverstone is a circuit that suits his riding style very well and that’s also reflected in his results of the past 2 years here. But the important thing is how the Sunday ends and not what we do on Friday. Therefore we’ll have to continue working to take another step forward. Ana gets on really well, despite this being a very technical track. She really likes the fast corners and to be honest she really surprised me today.
