Tough fightback ahead for Maverick Viñales in Sepang race

Maverick Viñales will start tomorrow’s race from the third row of the grid after a qualifying session that was marked by difficult track conditions and a small fault on his bike.

The session started on a wet track and the Team Calvo rider preferred to be a little cautious until the conditions improved and he could go out on his KTM with dry tyres. In the end he finished 9th but he is very confident he can catch up tot eh front during the race. Sepang is a circuit that he likes a lot and all weekend he’s shown a great pace.

Whilst Maverick preferred not to risk anything, his team mate Ana Carrasco was a bit more daring and went out on slicks right from the word go. She spent a good part of the session in the top 10, but once the track dried off she started losing positions and ended in 20th place.

This is not bad at all considering that Sepang is one of the technically most difficult circuits of the calendar. Now all that’s left to do is to hope it doesn’t rain during tomorrow’s race.

The day has been a bit strange. We struggled to find the right setup and in the straight we were lacking some power. But despite the position I’m happy because we’ve got a good pace with the race tyres. There are about 4 things that we’ll have to improve during the warm up tomorrow, but we’re almost there. The start will be very important to stop Salom from escaping at the front, but here the first corner is very wide and there are many good overtaking points.

#22 Ana Carrasco – 20th place – 2.15.645 / @AnaCarrasco_22
I’m happy because pretty much for the whole session we were in the top 10, on a wet track as well. We had a very good pace, but once the track started to dry, the faster riders improved. But I also improved my practice time by 1.3 seconds and I ended up in 20th position. That’s good, but after Aragón a little disappointing. Tomorrow we’ll have to really fight in the race because it’ll be long and difficult. Let’s see what we can make of this. I just hope it doesn’t rain.

It was a difficult session because we had some problems with the bike, but the team is already working with KTM to solve the issues before the race. The conditions were a bit strange too, first wet then dry. Maverick isn’t where we wanted him to be, he’ll have to catch up to the front runners tomorrow, but he can do this. I think Ana’s been spectacular today. She went out on slicks right from the beginning, she took the risk and she did a great qualifying at such a difficult circuit.
