Ana Carrasco impresses with seventh place on the grid, Vinales to start Australian GP from fourth
It’s been a great day of qualifying for Team Calvo in Phillip Island where Maverick Viñales and Ana Carrasco were doing well on their KTMs. Viñales, who was fastest in the morning session, couldn’t repeat his laptime from FP3 which was two tenth faster than pole position. But although he finished the day in fourth, the young Spaniard stays calm, because he has a good pace for the race and will be aiming for victory.
Ana Carrasco once again might history with the best qualifying result for a Spanish female ride in the world championship. Her adaptation to the Australian circuit went perfectly and she finished only six tenth behind pole position. Tomorrow she will start from seventh and her goal will be to stick with and learn from the fastest riders.
Maverick Viñales #25 – 4º – 1’37”361 “It’s not been the best qualifying, but first of all I want to congratulate Ana, because we did two laps together and she was fast. This morning we had a bit more acceleration and speed than in the qualifying and there’s only small gaps here. But we’re very happy, because we have a great bike and can do a ’37 pace which for me is the most important. Starting from first or second row doesn’t make much difference for me. I think tomorrow we can serve a big surprise and fight for victory.”
Ana Carrasco #22 – 7ª – 1’37”544 “I am very happy, because this is my best qualifying of the season and in general the weekend has been the same. We are working very well and the bike is setup perfectly. In the qualifying we had not the best strategy, so I am superhappy with this 7th place. I did the laptimes very easily and I felt very comfortable. The race will be very difficult, because I am not familiar with the guys I have in front. I’ll try to do my best and finish as far ahead as possible.”
