Team Pons HP 40 rider Maverick Viñales staged a brilliant first day at the Termas de Rio Hondo circuit.

The protégé of Sito Pons set the second fastest time during the morning session and finished the day in fifth place, at two tenths behind French rider Johan Zarco who set the fastest time on this first day.

Viñales, who adapted quickly to this new circuit on the World Championship calendar, dedicated the first two sessions to work on the setup of his Kalex to achieve a good setting for the race.

Luis Salom on the other hand had more problems with the setup of his Kalex and had difficulties adapting to the new track. Salom has a lot of work to do tomorrow to try and solve the problems he’s having with the back wheel.

Maverick Viñales – 5th place – 1.45.331
I’m content with the work we have done today. I like the circuit a lot, it’s very nice, it’s fast and it’s got many fun corners. We’ve been working on the setup to get everything ready for the race, just like we have been doing from the start of this season, even though we’re a little short of time to do this with it being a new track for everyone. I’m sure the times will drop a lot tomorrow, so we have to continue working and follow our work schedule to make sure we stay competitive.

Luis Salom – 24th place – 1.46.407
The beginning of this race weekend has been complicated, it’s not gone well but we’re working on improving things for Saturday. To be honest, this wasn’t what I’d expected. We’ve got two more sessions before the race so we have to continue work to improve my feeling with the rear wheel.
