The winner of the second GP of the season and Moto2 rookie, Maverick Viñales, has done a great job on the opening day of the GP of Spain, which takes place at the Jerez circuit this weekend. After last week’s crash in Argentina at the circuit of Termas de Rio Hondo, Viñales has come to Jerez determined to continue the good run of results that he had until the incident last Sunday. Viñales, who suffered a crash without consequences in the afternoon practice session , has spent the two sessions of the day trying different settings on his Kalex.

His teammate in the Pons HP 40 team, Luis Salom, arrived in Jerez very eager to repeat the fantastic performance from last week in Argentina, where he successfully battled for the third step of the podium. Luis, who already did a great job during the winter tests which were held at the Andalusian track, has had some problems with the rear tire grip preventing him from getting further up the timesheets. Salom finished with the ninth fastest time just seven thousandths of Viñales who was eighth.

The leader of the FIM CEV and debutant in the World Championship this weekend, Edgar Pons, had problems with his Kalex which prevented him from enjoying the morning session. In the afternoon he improved his time form the morning by almost a second, although it was far from his best time on this track. A difficult first day for the 18 year old who tried to make the most of the two sessions and attempted to cut the gap to the riders in front of him.

Maverick Viñales – 8th place – 1.43.930
This morning we have been testing various things that have worked pretty well. In the afternoon we had more things to try which unfortunately have not been as good. We got a lot of work done for tomorrow so I’m very confident. Once again the team did a spectacular job. They fixed the bike very fast and thanks to them I could put five laps in that worked really well.

Luis Salom – 9th place – 1.43.937
This has been the best Friday that we have had so far. We have made very good progress during the two sessions. I am very happy with the performance of the bike, we need a bit more grip in the back, but it’s not a serious problem and we will fix it tomorrow. I’m hopping with these small improvements I can be a little higher up and qualify well because it is very important to start from a good position in Moto2.

Edgar Pons – 35th place – 1.47.136
It’s been a difficult day. This morning we had problems with the bike and I could not do many laps. This afternoon we solved this, but we have made some changes in the fork which don’t feel right for me and I could not ride like I do normally. Tomorrow we’ll switch back to the old setting because with this setup I don’t feel comfortable and I rode much slower than I did the last time on this track. Tomorrow I want to continue enjoying the opportunity that I have and above all keep learning.
