Juanfran Guevara finishes Jerez GP weekend just outside the points
The first European race of the season did not disappoint as a huge crowd at Jerez gathered for an exciting Moto3 race that once again was not decided until the final lap. Whilst Jack Miller started from pole position the race did not go the way of the Australian as the challenge came from a group of eleven riders that included Fenati, Vázquez, Rins and Viñales.
Seven of them fought for victory until the final turn, where Rins attempted to seal a memorable home win with a move for the lead, only to run wide and allow Fenati in for his second straight win ahead of Vázquez and Rins.
MAPFRE Aspar rider Juanfran Guevara knew that he had plenty of work to do today starting from seventeenth on the grid. The young Spaniard held his position at the start but was unable to make up any serious ground in a frenetic start and he lost contact with the front group.
Stuck in a group setting similar 1’48 lap times the challenge was to hold his position and he eventually crossed the line in sixteenth.
16th Juanfran Guevara:
“The race flew by and it was already half distance when I looked at the lap counter for the first time. I tried to hold my position off the start but the first two corners were really tough and there was no room to make a move. I stuck with a fast group for most of the race and could maybe have gone even faster but I was lacking a little confidence under braking. That was what I needed to make some passes and try to push forward. On one hand I am happy with the lap times today, which were similar to the guys at the front, but disappointed because I wanted a better result in my home race. We were unlucky in qualifying yesterday and we paid the price with the grid position today.”
