The Pons HP 40 riders were key riders today in a hard-fought Moto2 race at the mystical circuit of Le Mans. Salom made a good start from the front row and managed to hold on to his position throughout the first lap.

His teammate Maverick Viñales also started well and was able to make up one position crossing the line in sixth place after one lap. The pace of the race was very high throughout and times were close to the pole time and also broke the circuit record which up to then had been held by Marc Marquez.

Salom spent the most of the race in the leading group with Corsi and Kallio and had a little gap to the following three riders, Viñales amongst them. With seven laps to go, Maverick had chased down the leaders and started fighting for a podium position.

During this chase, he set the new circuit record, the third after Qatar and Austin, and he overtook Salom four laps from the end. Both Salom and Viñales upped the pace to battle for the top three positions, but in the end had to settle for fourth and fifth place respectively.

Maverick Viñales – 4th place
“I’m happy with the weekend. We did some great work during the free practice sessions on Friday and Saturday. I knew I had to make a good start and I was able to do just that. The top group pulled away a bit and they were going very fast. The pace was very high and it was a bit complicated to catch them. We have to continue our hard work because we’re still lacking a little bit, but I believe we can be happy with the result and I’d like to thank the team for all their hard work that we’re doing together.”

Luis Salom – 5th place
“I’m happy because I think we had a good race. We were fighting for the podium the entire race. I think in the end I got a little nervous and went wide a couple of times. When I was ready to attack Tito again, Maverick had closed up on me and overtook me. When I tried to pull back, I went wide again and therefore I decided to try and bring the fifth position home.”
