Albert Arenas completes strong Spanish GP weekend
It has been a learning weekend for MRW Aspar Mahindra youngster Albert Arenas, who has enjoyed a memorable few days as a wildcard at the Spanish Grand Prix.
The Spaniard has made constant improvements since first taking to the track on Friday morning and after starting today’s race from fifteenth following the penalty to Binder he spent the early stages of the race in a points-scoring position.
Arenas battled hard in a group that at some points totalled ten riders, fighting with much more experienced rivals to eventually take eighteenth place, just six tenths of a second outside the points.
18th Albert Arenas:
“I was running in the top ten during warm-up this morning and that gave me a lot of confidence for the race because I had shown I could be up there. You have to take into account that I am giving away a lot of knowledge to the riders with more experience but little by little we have closed the gap. The first objective for the race was to get a good start, which I did. I was in eleventh and in touch with the leaders but the more the race went on the more I struggled to stay there. We hadn’t quite found the perfect set-up for the bike during practice. I was still fighting for fourteenth place right to the end of the race. The good thing is that I have learnt today what it takes to run at the front in this class and the experience is great preparation for the races that are coming up.”
