Jorge Martin falls victim to treacherous conditions at the Sachsenring
After a calm Saturday at the German GP, the storm arrived on Sunday. Rain hit the Moto3 race, and track temperatures dropped some 15ºC. The best rider in adapting to the conditions at the Sachsenring was Khairul Idham Pawi, who left behind his rivals to win the race by more than eleven seconds -having started from twentieth on the grid.
Italians Andrea Locatelli and Enea Bastianini joined Pawi on the podium, and title contenders Brad Binder and Jorge Navarro finished eighth and seventh, respectively.
Jorge Martín started the race from tenth position -with the confidence of having been out in front during the morning warmup session as a boost. However, during the race he lacked feeling with the bike and suffered from a grip issue.
The Spaniard did work his way up into fifth, but had to adopt a cautious approach as other riders passed him and crashed out inexplicably before the end. The good news for Martín was that he could confirm that his hand is back to full strength following an injury.
Jorge Martín (DNF):
“There was a lot of water on track, and even on the early laps in which I was riding very well, the setup gave me the feeling that I was riding on ice. I found it hard to open the throttle and brake, so a number of riders passed me, and when I was waiting for the laps to go by I crashed without warning. I was neither braking nor accelerating. That’s the nature of racing in the wet. Overall, I’m happy with how the weekend went, because I’ve been fast in the dry. In addition, my hand is feeling perfect again after the injury.”
