FIM CEV Portimao – Unbeatable start to 2020 for the Openbank Aspar Team Junior with David Alonso’s triple victory
The Openbank Aspar Team Junior has completed an unbeatable start to the season with a new victory for David Alonso, the third in the first three races of the championship. The young European Talent Cup rider has become today in Portimao the second rider ever to get three consecutive victories in the category, only Izan Guevara in 2019 had achieved more than two consecutive victories. With this victory, his leadership grows stronger and now he has 75 points, 23 more than the rider on second place and 38 more than teammate Iván Ortolá, who sits in third position. Ortolá fought today with the chasing group to finally cross the line in sixth, six tenths from the second place.
In the Moto3 Junior World Championship, Dani Holgado finished just ten thousandths off the podium positions after a great comeback from eighteenth place on the grid. The rider from Alicante has fought until the end for the race victory, in a group of seven riders in which he has crossed the finish line in fourth position. His teammate Izan Guevara has completed another comeback, in his case from twenty-first position on the grid to being thirteenth in the race. Behind them, Ondrej Vostatek has closed these two weeks of races with a twenty-fifth position, also coming back from behind. With these results, Daniel Holgado ranks fifth overall, with Izan Guevara ninth. The next appointment for the FIM CEV Repsol riders will be the weekend of August, 30 at the Jerez – Ángel Nieto circuit.
European Talent Cup:
1st David Alonso:
“It was a good race, especially after the red flag, because the second start was even better for me. I was able to escape from the group and keep my pace until achieving the third victory. This victory is good for the championship, we are very happy. I want to thank the team and my family for everything they do for me.”
6th Iván Ortolá:
“I am proud of the work we have done. Before the red flag that stopped the race, I had managed to be second, but in the new start it took me a little longer to come back and when I reached second position it was already a little late to fight for victory. I had a touch with another rider with two laps to go, I was overtaken by a couple of rivals and I have struggled to fight for the podium. Now it’s time to think about the next race, which will be the first of the Red Bull Rookies Cup.”
Moto3 Junior World Championship:
4th Daniel Holgado:
“We have finished ten thousandths off the podium, that means that we are there, with the best, and that we can opt for something more than a podium this year. It was a difficult weekend, because we lacked a quick lap to qualify better on the grid, but we knew we had a good pace. Together with my team we worked hard and thanks to them we were able to solve it: today I went out on the track with the perfect bike for the warm-up session and, riding alone, I was third. That result has given me great motivation for the race. I want to thank the team for the work they have done this weekend. Now, we will continue preparing for the following round in Jerez.”
12+1 Izan Guevara:
“It was a difficult race because we started from behind and I had to come back. I made a good start, but an incident with another rider in the third corner has costed me some time. I have been able to set a good pace during the race until finishing in the 12+1 position. I felt strong after the morning warm-up session. We will continue to improve in the following rounds.”
25th Ondrej Vostatek:
“We started from the 30th position and I have been able to recover several positions until finishing twenty-fifth, we still have room for improvement. It is being a difficult start to the season, but we will continue fighting at the next races, in Jerez, at the end of August.”
