Albert Arenas wins the Spanish GP, Stefano Nepa finishes twelfth

 In Moto3, News

The “new normal” resembles the old normal of 2020 in the Moto3 World Championship: unpredictable group races with countless contenders for victory and, as in Qatar, Albert Arenas wins. The Gaviota Aspar Team rider has achieved a new victory at the Jerez – Ángel Nieto circuit, the second this year, and leads the championship standings by 14 points. Arenas has worked throughout the weekend thinking about the race and both his effort and that of his technical team have had a great reward. The winner of the Spanish Grand Prix has led a large part of the race and, although he has faced the last laps in the intermediate positions of the group, he has known how to take advantage of the perfect moment to cross the finish line as the winner.

The Spanish Grand Prix has also meant the first points for the Gaviota Aspar Team rider Stefano Nepa, who has completed a very consistent weekend, in which he has finished twelfth, just four seconds off the winner. The Italian started from the sixteenth position on the grid, after qualifying directly for Q2 yesterday. From there, Nepa has competed in the leading group, which encompassed more than fifteen drivers, and has remained constant and flawless until the end. The next challenge for the Gaviota Aspar Team riders will be next weekend, again at the Jerez – Ángel Nieto circuit, in the first Grand Prix of Andalusia.

WINNER Albert Arenas:
“It is incredible. We were very motivated to come to Jerez, I was nervous to return to the track, to see what would happen, but I have focused on staying calm and doing my job. Today, in the warm-up session, I preferred to ride alone, working for the race. We saw something we could change on the bike, it was just what we needed, and we did it before the race. We have done incredible teamwork. During the weekend I have not sought to stand out or to be in the first positions just for no reason, there is a lot of difference between riding and working for the race and making just a fast lap. In the race I had good feelings and great corner speed. I am very happy, on the last lap I thought it was okay to finish on the podium, but I knew that if I did the right thing at the right time, I could win. I want to dedicate this victory to all the people who are suffering due to the pandemic. We are fortunate to be here competing, we have grown a lot during confinement. Also, racing without an audience has been strange, but if it is the best for everyone, it is a good solution.”

12th Stefano Nepa (+3,936):
“I am happy with this result; we have returned to where we deserved and it is a race that gives us morale. We have been in the lead group the whole time and we have finished only four seconds from Arenas, not bad. Too bad the grid position, because from the sixteenth place it takes a little more to recover, you are further from the first. I did well, although I couldn’t push the tyre on the first few laps, but then I kept a good pace. I want to thank the team, my family, and the sponsors for all they do for us.”
