Solunion Aspar Team rider Aron Canet has lived one of the happiest days of his life at the Portuguese Grand Prix, in which he has been able to get on the podium for the first time in the intermediate category. The Spanish rider has been second after a constant race, in which he has even lead some laps. Canet started from ninth position in Portimao and after a hesitant start he has begun to overtake rivals to take the lead. After a tough battle with riders such as Raúl Fernández, Remy Gardner and Joe Roberts, the Solunion Aspar Team rider prevailed over most of them and only missed the victory by 1.6 seconds.

Canet, visibly excited after the race, has been confident in his chances in the next championship rounds as he has a set-up base that will allow him to fight with the leading riders. With this result, Aron Canet climbs to sixth position in the general standings of the intermediate category and cuts up to 14 points with respect to the leadership. The fall of Sam Lowes has allowed the Australian Remy Gardner to assault the first position of the general, tightening the classification even more.

Albert Arenas has got three more points in his debut season in the Moto2 World Championship after finishing thirteenth in the Portimao race. The Solunion Aspar Team rider started from the third row of the grid and fought with the middle group for a position in the points. Arenas closed the gap with the winner and finished 19 seconds from victory in his third race in the category. The next appointment for him and his teammate Aron Canet will be the Spanish Grand Prix at the Jerez – Ángel Nieto circuit.

2nd Aron Canet (+1,600):
“It is one of the happiest days of my life, along with the day I got my first Moto3 podium. I will never forget it. It’s time to enjoy, not every day you get to finish second in Moto2. I can’t articulate words. We fought from the beginning, we lost positions, we stayed calm, we fought and we finished on the podium. It is the third race of the year and we have reached the goal we had in mind at the start of the season. We have a good set-up and in Jerez we will continue this same line.”

12 + 1 Albert Arenas (+19,513):
“We finished the weekend in Portimao and I think we can be happy. We have taken a step forward and we take three points, which are not enough, but we have given the maximum. It is important to understand what we need to go faster. In the race there was a point where I had to force the bike a lot to turn it and it was not a natural ride. It will be important to see what we need to improve that and to be able to go faster in Jerez.”
