Strong sixth place for Darryn Binder in #ArgentinaGP
At the Argentina Grand Prix, Darryn Binder of the LIQUI MOLY Husqvarna Intact GP team showed, that he is a serious contender for the top 10 places, even as a Moto2 rookie, after taking a sensational sixth place in the sprint race, which was shortened to 14 laps.
The South African with the big smile has every reason to be happy on this rainy race Sunday at the Autodromo Termas de Rio Hondo.
Darryn Binder went into the wet sprint race in eleventh place after his strong Q1 and Q2 qualifying. His start went well as the 25-year-old initially managed to hold his position through the first corner, but then he ignited a rocket. Within a few corners and before the end of the first lap, the newcomer to the LIQUI MOLY Husqvarna Intact GP team found himself in a fabulous seventh place.
But the story didn’t end there. It didn’t take long for Binder to fight for fifth position behind Lopez, Canet, Dixon, and Arbolino. In the meantime, he even took up the chase of the leading group in fourth position, which already had a lead of more than five seconds. Three laps before the end of the race, Binder finally had to admit defeat to Garcia in the fight for fifth position.
With this sixth place, the younger brother of MotoGP rider Brad Binder collected his first Moto2 World Championship points and is in good spirits not only to further increase his learning curve from the 14th – 16th of April in Austin but also to be able to further fill his points account.
Darryn Binder
P6 – (+12.274)“This was the first time for me to ride the bike in full wet conditions and going to the grid I already felt pretty confident with the bike. It gave me some good feedback already in the sighting lap so I got off to a good start, and found myself in fourth position at one stage, trying to hang on to the front group but I just never had the same place as them. As the laps were going on, I knew I was still learning and trying to find my limit and I was really nervous to push too hard and make a mistake as it was my first Moto2 race in the rain. I tried to keep my own rhythm and in the end, I was in a battle for fifth position. I tried my best in the last laps to plan a little attack but unfortunately, I couldn’t pull it off so I finished sixth. Overall I am super with how the weekend went and with every race, I am gaining more experience, and step by step we’re coming closer.”
