Adrian Fernandez 5th in rain soaked #AustralianGP, Jaume Masia 8th
Le0pard Racing completes the Australian Grand Prix with one of the most difficult races we have experienced this season so far. On a rain soaked day, Jaume Masià took 8th position while Adrián Fernández crossed the finish line in 5th place.
Heavy rain, strong wind and chilly conditions greeted us for race day at Phillip Island. An extraordinary Warm Up session took place this morning due to the weather conditions, with Jaume Masià finishing in 1st place and Adrián Fernández in 23rd on their first wet outing this weekend.
The time came for the race to kick off as it began to rain, with Le0pard Racing starting from the 9th spot on the grid with Adrián Fernández and from the 13th with Jaume Masià. The first laps were frantic as the heavy rain kept falling while Adrián Fernández managed to take the lead a few moments later following a great start to the race. For his part, Jaume Masià started the race strongly too, moving up positions to sit in 6th place in the early stages of it.
A dominant Adrián Fernández, who held the lead from the moment he hit the front, began to open up a gap, pulling away from the group as the laps went by. The gap between him and the riders behind was constantly changing, but no one was able to overtake him in what was from the start a very difficult race due to the weather conditions.
Jaume Masià soon started to struggle, dropping down some positions to sit in 11th place halfway through the race. The Spaniard recovered the confidence soon, starting to make up some places to cross the finish line in 8th position at the end, holding the Championship lead.
Adrián Fernández kept commanding the race when, 6 laps to go, he suffered a crash at Turn 11, losing the lead but being able to re-join the track to end up taking 5th position.
It hasn’t been the best weekend for us, but both Le0pard riders have been able to save the day in what was a very difficult situation due to the adverse weather.
See you in Thailand next week!
Adrián Fernández – 5th
I tried to do the best race of my life, but the track was in very difficult conditions and a crash prevented us from taking what was shaping up to be a victory. However, we crossed the finish line in 5th position, which is a great result. After all this time at home, it’s amazing to be here and to be able to put in a race like today’s.
Jaume Masià – 8th
It wasn’t the weekend we expected, nor the race we hoped for. The race was tough because of the heavy rain, the wind and the cold. In addition, I had a lot of moments in Turn 3, and at the end I was frozen. I think we saved the day in the best possible way given the circumstances. We will keep working hard to face the next races strongly.
