Penalty heartbreak for Fabio Di Giannantonio after epic final ride of 2023, 6th for Alex Marquez
It was a Sunday marked by tears and joy for Team Gresini MotoGP and Fabio Di Giannantonio, who part ways with a podium at Valencia’s Ricardo Tormo Circuit. The Italian rider put together an incredible comeback from 11th on the grid and then a crazy final stretch, with a pace that was half a second quicker than Zarco and Bagnaia. Once he got past the Frenchman, the eventual World Champion did well in stopping Diggia’s recovery. And it only matters a little that a three-second penalty left the Italian just outside podium positions, because the show had happened already.
Alex Marquez also had a great race as he wrapped up the season with another extremely positive result, which has a positive feel ahead of next season.
SHOW – FABIO DI GIANNANTONIO #49
(12th in the championship standings with 151 points)
“We did an amazing race and the team deserved it. We wanted to win, and we try everything until the last corner. Pecco did an incredible job, there’s a reason he’s the World Champion. We, on the other hand, wrap up an incredible season and I say goodbye to a great team, with whom I’ve spent fantastic moments.”
6th – ALEX MARQUEZ #73
(9th in the championship standings with 177 points)
“The pace was good and it’s a shame that we couldn’t finish any higher. Regarding the sanction to Binder a no comment is the best thing, because there has been a lack of coherence during the whole season, and it has been confirmed today. Pecco the right champion, he did well and it’s a shame for Jorge who maybe felt the pressure a bit too much.”
