World Supersport Race 1 Australia Report
World Supersport kicked off with a bang in 2025 at Phillip Island in Australia.
Stefano Manzi won the first race of the season after making some brilliant overtakes in this race with Pata Yamaha Ten Kate debuting the new Yamaha R9 in WorldSSP. Manzi went into the pits on Lap 9 and the front four broke away to fend each other off after the pit stops finished. He fended off Jaume Masià, Can Öncü and Marcel Schrötter tactfully.
Jaume Masià made a thrilling debut in the series and crossed the line first but after a potentially naive approach to the pit stop, it cost him in the end. His pit intervention time wasn’t long enough to meet the regulations and he was penalised by 3.850s which dropped his final race position back to 6th. The Orelac Racing Verdnatura rider had a brilliant debut in the series nonetheless and looks promising for the rest of the weekend and season.
PTR Triumph Factory Racing’s Tom Booth-Amos finished second and Can Öncü debuted with the Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros team. Öncü’s switch to the Yamaha paid off for this race after gaining the holeshot from starting P4. Xavi Cardelus and Michael Ruben Rinaldi’s races ended in technical issues. The Australians Oli Bayliss and Luke Power finished P7 and P12 respectively.
Manzi on his first win of the season: “It’s great to open the new season with a win and to an era of a new bike with a win […] My only goal was to catch him and to win and I do it. For sure [the title] is the goal but my goal is to go as fast as possible and in the end we see where we end up.”
